SSC Open Squash Championship conducted by Sri Lanka Squash with the support of Sinhalese Sports Club was successfully concluded at Sinhalese Sports Club (SSC) Squash Complex with the finals of the main events followed by the award ceremony taking place on 27th July 2025. Mr A D H Samranayaka- Secretary of SSC graced the occasion as Chief Guest while Secretary of Indoor games at SSC, Mr Nethru Nanayakkara graced the occasion as guest of honor. The Championship was conducted as a senior national ranking Championship.
Methmal Wood from Sri Lanka Army who holds a PSA International Ranking of 436 went on to clinch his Maiden Men’s Open title after a hard fought match . Viduranga Udantha from Sri Lanka Air Force who holds a PSA International ranking of 473 took the first game to the wire and despite leading on several occasions just couldn’t put the finishing touches on time . Wood remained calm throughout the match and used his experience and skill to overcome the tough challenge presented by his opponent with the finals scores reading at 13/11,11/4,11/6 in his favour to win the SSC Challenge trophy for the men’s category.
The 3rd /4th playoff saw a clash between two players from Sri Lanka Air force with Usham Arif going on to beat Thinura Randina in a very tight 5 setter while Suraj Daniel and Ilham Asmone both from Sri Lanka Army, went on to secure the 5th to 6th places respectively.
Reigning National Champion Chanithma Sinaly from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidyalaya who holds a PSA International ranking of 217 went on to take the Women’s Open title controlling the game from the beginning and giving minimum room for error. Chanithma beat Adithi Gunesekara from Ladies College in straight sets with the scores reading at 11/4,11/2,11/5 in the finals to win the SSC Challenge trophy for the women’s category.
14 years old Sithumli Mendis from Gateway International College made two huge upsets when she beat ¾ seeds Ranliya Wood in a five setter in the quarter finals and Akeesha Samaranayake from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidyalaya in the 3rd/4th playoff to take 3rd place in the Women open event.
Ifra Booso from St. Pauls College – Milagiriya who did well at recently concluded Asian Individual Squash Championship to reach top 16 in Asia went on to win the 5th place overcoming Miyuni Weerasinghe from Sirimavo Bandaranayake Vidyalaya in straight sets.
